The Mwambesi Nature Forest Reserve is located in the Ruvuma Region’s Tunduru District, and spans an impressive 112,901 hectares of miombo woodland. The reserve’s boundary follows the Msenjewe River from the north to the northeastern and traces the Ruvuma River from the east to the south. On the west, the boundary is defined by the banks of the Mitesa and Mwambesi Rivers.

Climate

The region is characterized by a hot climate, averaging less than 1000mm of annual rainfall. The exhibits a tropical climate, defined by a distinct rainfall pattern: a wet season from December to May and a dry season from June to November. Temperature variations are notable, with an average of 25°C with highest temperature being 29°C and the lowest is 22°C.

How to Get to Mwambesi Game Reserve

Located in the remote Ruvuma region of Tanzania, the Forest Reserve can be a bit challenging to reach. Here is the main option for getting there.

By road:   the game reserve is accessible only by four-wheel-drive vehicles. To reach it, take the Mtwara-lindi road, then turn onto a rough dirt road that leads directly to the reserve. The journey from Mtwara to Mwambesi typically takes around 4 to 5 hours, depending on the condition of the roads.

By air: the closest airport to the forest Reserve is Mtwara Airport, which is served by several domestic airlines, including Precision Air and Coastal Aviation. Travelers can fly from Dar es Salaam or other majors’ cities to Mtwara and then continue their journey to the reserve by road.

By train: the TAZARA Railway line runs through the Ruvuma Region, with a station in Mbamba Bay, approximately 150 km from the reserve. Visitors can take a train from Dar es Salaam to Mbamba Bay and then arrange for road transport to Mwambesi.
